Pupil Premium

Which pupils qualify for Free School Meals and what is Pupil Premium?

If you receive one of the following benefits, then your child may be entitled to Free School Meals:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit, but are not entitled to a Working Tax Credit and your annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) is less than £16,190
  • Support under Part V1 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit

If you are on a low income, and in receipt of certain benefits, your child is not only entitled to a free school meal, but also things like free milk, help towards school trips and other support. We would urge all eligible parents to apply, as this application ensures that your child's school receives the additional funds to be able to provide this. You are entitled to this additional support if you have a child in Kirklees who is in full time education, and if you receive one or more of the above.

From September 2014, all children in Reception and Key Stage 1 (year 1 and year 2) became entitled to free school meals. This entitlement for all stops after year 2. From year 3 onwards, families who satisfy the above criteria can continue to claim free school meals for their children.

In addition, all schools must provide a free school meal to all Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children.  This is known as Universal Infant Free School Meals.

What are the benefits of claiming Free School Meals?

Claiming Free School Meals also helps the school. We get extra funding for every eligible child known as Pupil Premium.  The pupil premium amount the school will receive in extra funding towards your child's education is £1320.00.

If your child has a school meal, it is a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime.

What is the Pupil Premium and how will it be used in school?

The pupil premium is a funding grant provided by the Government directly to the school to help all pupils reach their full potential, regardless of their background or financial situation.

For information on how the Pupil Premium funding was allocated see our disadvantaged reports below:

2023-242022-2023 2021 -2022 2019 - 2020   2018 - 2019

Pupils may be eligible if they are:

  • Registered for Free School Meals
  • Are, or have been in care
  • Have parents in the armed forces.

The Pupil Premium funding is used by school to improve the education and achievement of pupils who are eligible.  The more eligible children that are registered, the more funding the school will receive.

You should still register for Free School Meals, even if your child already receives a Universal Infant Free School Meal.

Registering does not mean that your child has to have a school meal if they do not want to or if you would rather that your child had a different meal such as a packed lunch.

We do however, encourage all children at Brambles Primary Academy to have a school lunch.
