Important Information
The School Day
Children arrive between 08:30 and 08:45.
The class register will be taken at 8:45am and learning will begin immediately after this. It is vital that pupils are on time to school so that they do not miss any important learning.
Pupils should bring to school each day:
- Their reading books and reading record
- A water bottle with their name on
- Suitable clothing for the weather
- A packed lunch (if required) or select your child's meal on Arbor before school
Pupils are to be collected from school at 3:15pm

PE Days
In Year 1 Ivy, PE is taught on a Wednesday and Friday.
In Year 1 Cherry, PE is taught on a Wednesday and Friday.
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit.

This half term we will be learning...
Phonics
We follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme. A weekly information sheet will be sent home via ClassDojo to inform parents what children have been learning that week. Please support children at home by practicing the phonemes, tricky words and sentences. The images below shows how children are taught to form letters correctly and the sounds they have already learnt. 
English
This half term in English, Year 1 will be enjoying a range of exciting texts and writing opportunities. We will begin by reading Funny Bones, a fun and memorable story that will help us develop our understanding of labels, lists and captions. The children will practise identifying and writing labels for pictures, creating simple lists and adding captions to describe what they can see.
Our next topic, Marvellous Me, will encourage children to celebrate their uniqueness and talk proudly about themselves. We will learn how to organise information and create a fact file about ourselves, including our interests, families, favourite things and special talents. This topic will help the children develop their speaking, listening and writing skills while building confidence in sharing information with others.
Later in the term, we will explore Firework Night and use this exciting celebration as inspiration for our writing. The children will learn and perform a variety of poems, exploring rhyme, rhythm and descriptive language. We will use our senses to imagine the sights, sounds and colours of fireworks, helping us to create our own vibrant and imaginative poetry.
Throughout these topics, children will continue to develop their phonics, reading, handwriting, spelling and sentence-writing skills through engaging activities, discussions and creative learning experiences. We are looking forward to a wonderful term of storytelling, writing and imagination!
Maths
In Year 1 Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear and structured approach to learning and supports children in developing a secure understanding of key concepts.
This half term, we will focus on Place Value within 10, where children will learn to count, read and write numbers to 10, compare numbers and understand the value of each digit. We will then move on to Addition and Subtraction within 10, using a range of practical resources and pictorial methods to help children develop fluency and confidence when solving number problems.
We will also explore Geometry, learning about a variety of 2D and 3D shapes. Children will identify, name and describe shapes, as well as investigate their properties through hands-on activities and mathematical investigations.
Throughout our maths lessons, children will be encouraged to explain their thinking, use mathematical vocabulary and develop their reasoning skills. We look forward to seeing the children grow in confidence as they become enthusiastic and successful young mathematicians.
Science
This half term, Year 1 will be learning about Animals Including Humans. We will identify and label different parts of the human body, including some of the important parts inside our bodies such as the heart, lungs, brain and bones. We will also learn how our bodies help us to move, grow and stay healthy.
Children will explore the importance of exercise and how it helps keep our bodies fit and strong. We will also learn about our five senses and take part in exciting practical activities to discover how we use them to understand the world around us.
Throughout the topic, the children will think and work like scientists by making observations, asking questions and carrying out simple investigations.
History
This half term in History, our topic is There's Only One Me. We will learn about the past and compare our lives with the lives of people from long ago. Children will explore similarities and differences between their own childhood and their grandparents' childhoods, finding out how daily life has changed over time.
We will investigate homes, toys and schools from the past, comparing them with those we have today. Children will learn about old household objects and artefacts, create simple timelines and develop an understanding of how life has changed over the years.
Art
In Art, our topic is Make Your Mark. Children will explore a range of drawing techniques, learning how to create different types of lines, patterns and marks using a variety of materials. We will experiment with pencils, chalks, pastels and other media to develop our artistic skills and creativity.
We will study the work of famous artists, including Pablo Picasso, and use his artwork as inspiration for our own creations. The children will create self-portraits, experiment with continuous line drawing and explore abstract art using different shapes, colours and textures.
Throughout the unit, children will develop their observation skills, learn how to evaluate artwork and gain confidence in expressing their ideas through drawing and mark-making.
RE
For our RE studies we follow the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus.
This half term in RE, we will be exploring the question "Which books and stories are important?" We will think about our own favourite books and stories before learning about special holy books from different religions, including the Bible, Qur’an, Torah and Guru Granth Sahib.
Children will listen to a range of stories and discuss the important messages and morals they teach. We will explore stories from different religions, thinking about how these stories help people make choices about how to live their lives.
Throughout the topic, we will learn how these holy books are treated with respect and consider the values of kindness, care, respect and helping others
PSHE
Throughout the module, children will develop skills such as self-awareness, resilience and positive thinking, helping them to build strong foundations for learning, friendships and personal growth.
Music
As musicians, we follow the Kapow music scheme.
This half term, Year 1 will be following the Kapow Music scheme and exploring the unit My Favourite Things. Children will enjoy singing, listening and responding to a variety of songs and pieces of music inspired by things they love. They will learn to keep a steady beat, explore rhythm and pitch, and begin to use musical vocabulary to describe what they hear.
Through games, performances and creative musical activities, children will build their confidence, develop their listening skills and enjoy making music together.
