Important Information

The School Day:

The gates will open from 8:30am.  The class register will be taken at 8:45am and learning will  begin immediately after this.  It is important that pupils are on time to school so that they do not miss any learning.

Pupils should bring to school each day:

  • A water bottle with their name on
  • Suitable clothing for the weather to ensure they are comfortable during outdoor break times
  • A packed lunch (if required)
  • Their reading book

Pupils are to be collected from school at 3:15pm.

PE:

  • 6 Elm have PE every Tuesday (indoor) and Wednesday(outdoor).
  • 6 Oak have PE every Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday(indoor).
  • Children should come to School in their PE kits. Jewellery and watches must be removed for PE lessons.

Please click here for details of PE kit and school uniform

Homework:

Homework is given out every Friday and is due back the following week. Homework will be focused on the maths unit we are currently learning in class.  Additionally, will receive a SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) task to ensure the children practise frequently to help them build their skills as writers and build their confidence.

Reading:

It is crucial that your child reads as often as possible, preferably with an adult, who can support with understanding of the text, e.g. by asking them questions about what they have read. While the children are now mostly able to read without help, questions will help them develop their comprehension skills.

We have also created Read Theory accounts for all children in Year 6. This is a free online tool to aid children with their reading comprehension: Log in | ReadTheory

This half term we will be learning...

English:

This half term in English, Year 6 will be developing their descriptive writing skills by creating detailed character descriptions based on a character from Macbeth. Pupils will explore the language Shakespeare uses, analyse the traits and motives of key characters, and learn how to use ambitious vocabulary, figurative language and varied sentence structures to bring their own character descriptions to life. This unit will help children deepen their understanding of classic literature while strengthening their ability to write with precision and imagination.

Guided Reading:

This half term, Year 6 will be focusing on developing key reading skills through SATs‑style questions rather than working on a single class text. Children will explore a range of question types, including retrieval, vocabulary, inference, summarising and explanation. They will learn how to identify what each question is asking, choose evidence carefully, and answer with accuracy and confidence. This approach will help pupils build the skills and strategies needed to approach SATs reading papers with greater independence and success.

Maths:

This half term in Maths, Year 6 will continue to strengthen their arithmetic skills, building fluency and confidence with key calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Alongside this, the children will begin a new unit exploring area, perimeter and volume. They will learn how to calculate the space inside shapes, the distance around them, and the capacity of 3‑D objects. These topics will help pupils apply their arithmetic knowledge to real‑life problem‑solving and deepen their understanding of shape and measure.

Science:

This half-term, our Science topic is Animals including Humans.  At the end of this unit children will be able to:

  • Identify the main parts of the human circulatory system and describe the function of the heart, blood vessels and blood.
  • Describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals including humans.
  • Recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function.

Topic

Our topic in Year 6 this half term is 'The Americas'. During this topic, we will begin by looking at the Geography side including the Polar Regions and then move onto History.

In Geography we will look at:

    • The similarities and differences between the geography of the Arctic and Antarctic.
    • Where the Polar Regions are located.
    • The Earth's biomes and where they are located.
    • How Antarctica is protected.
    • Where North and South America are located and some of their countries.

Art:

In Art, Year 6 will be linking their work to our topic, The Americas. The children will be researching the vibrant and expressive artwork of Corey Barksdale, exploring his use of colour and movement, and practicing creating their own pieces in his style using painting and mixed media. They will also revisit the work of David Hockney, an artist they studied in Year 5, evaluating his techniques and producing artwork inspired by his distinctive style.

RE:

In RE lessons, we will be studying 'What do Christians believe about the old and new covenants?'

through the Kirklees Agreed RE Syllabus.

PSHE:

In PSHE, we use a  scheme called My Happy Mind. In year 6, the children are specifically looking at transitions and how to manage the different emotions that they might be feeling. This half term, the students will be looking at a unit called 'Relate'. In this unit, they will be understanding how forming friendships are important and how we choose positive friendships.

Music:

In Music, Year 6 will be taking part in a six‑week unit that builds on their previous musical learning. The focus of this unit is Benjamin Britten’s Friday Afternoons, with a particular emphasis on the song A New Year Carol. Throughout the unit, pupils will explore the structure and features of the piece, develop their listening and appraisal skills, and build confidence in singing as an ensemble.

MFL:

In this unit,  Year 6 will be learning all about the planets and the Solar System. In their language lessons, pupils will use key descriptive vocabulary and apply adjectival agreement to describe different features of space. They will also develop their sentence‑building skills by using conjunctions and intensifiers to create longer, more detailed descriptions. The unit will lead up to an exciting role‑play activity, where pupils work in pairs to perform a mock interview between an astrophysicist and an astronaut preparing for a space expedition.
